Heritage Museums and Gardens
The Heritage Museums and Gardens in Sandwich is an anchor of the festival. Home to two extraordinary hydrangea collections, it draws visitors every single day of the ten-day event. The Cape Cod Hydrangea Society Display Garden is especially remarkable. Approximately 60 percent of its 155-plus cultivars are legacy varieties no longer found in cultivation anywhere else in the world. Alongside it, the North American Hydrangea Test Garden showcases more than 240 of the newest varieties currently being evaluated, all planted alongside companion species for real-world design inspiration. Make sure to bring your camera for romantic Cape Cod photographs. Guided tours depart at 11 am daily and last about 30 minutes, while a discovery cart staffed by knowledgeable volunteers operates from 11:30 am to 3 pm. On Saturday, July 11, Sandwich residents, seniors 65 and older, and veterans can visit entirely free on Community Day.
Opportunities to Purchase and Create Art
For those who want to take their hydrangea appreciation beyond simply admiring the flowers, the festival’s art programming is genuinely impressive.
- The Hyannis HyArts Artist Shanties kick things off even before the official start date, offering festival discounts beginning July 6.
- The Sandwich Arts Alliance hosts a two-hour mixed media vase class on July 11 and July 14, guiding participants through a therapeutic process using paper collage, markers, beads, and buttons.
- Little Creek Farm in Eastham offers a beginner-friendly watercolor hydrangea painting session on July 11.
- Marsh View hosts a photography workshop on July 14 covering composition, smartphone camera techniques, and creative editing.

Gardening Workshops
Gardeners looking to sharpen their skills have no shortage of options.
- Beacon Gardens is hosting two excellent sessions: a general hydrangea advice day on July 11, where staff answer any and all questions about planting, maintaining, and arranging, and a companion planting workshop on July 14 focused on combining hydrangeas with other plants for lasting color and texture in beds and containers.
- Also on July 14, master gardener Yasmine McNellis leads a propagation workshop through the Eastham Chamber, teaching simple methods for growing new plants from cuttings. Every attendee leaves with their own ready-to-grow stem cutting and a set of step-by-step instructions.
Author Signings
Book lovers and garden enthusiasts will want to cross paths with C. L. Fornari, author of Hydrangea Happiness and the longtime caretaker of Poison Ivy Acres in Sandwich, one of the festival’s garden tours. Fornari signs books at three locations across the Cape: Hyannis Country Garden on July 10, the Provincetown Art Museum on July 12, and the Heritage Museum and Gardens on July 15. Her own garden, open July 18, contains all six hydrangea species featured in her book and has been lovingly maintained for nearly two decades.
Evening Events
The evening events add a social dimension to the festival that’s hard to resist.
- The official kickoff party at Heritage Museums and Gardens on July 9 from 6 to 7:30 pm sets the tone with light refreshments and a hydrangea-inspired mocktail.
- Later in the festival, on July 15 from 5 to 8 pm, Hydrangea Gallery and Gifts hosts The Endless Summer Soirée at The West End. This festive evening offers hors d’oeuvres, a signature bar, and live jazz, with guests encouraged to dress in their favorite hydrangea-inspired colors.
Private Garden Tours
Of course, the beating heart of the entire festival is the private garden tours. For just $5 per person per garden, visitors are welcomed into lovingly tended spaces across the Cape, each one a reflection of its owner’s personality and passion. With dozens of gardens participating across the ten days, you could easily spend the entire festival touring one or two each day and never run out of new things to discover. All tours are rain or shine, so pack a light jacket and come ready to be inspired. This is just a small sampling of what you will find:
- In Brewster alone, three gardens are clustered near Brewster By The Sea Inn:
- JoAnn Piscillo’s garden on Maple Lane (July 13 and 14) is home to more than 70 hydrangeas and showcases a talent for repurposing and original design
- Valhalla at 499 Harwich Road (July 15 and 16) pairs large-scale botanical paintings by the resident artist with the living garden that inspired them
- Papa’s Garden on Aarons Way (July 15 and 16) leads visitors through hydrangeas into a secluded backyard retreat with a hidden vegetable and flower garden tucked within.
- Tiny & Wild in South Dennis (July 10 and 17) shows that even small gardens can make a difference for songbirds and local pollinators.
- The historic Chesbro Garden in Osterville (July 11 and 12) is a property established as a berry patch back in 1929.
- The Joanne Robichaud Garden in Barnstable (July 12 and 13) offers a stunning collection of heirloom and newer hydrangea varieties planted more than 40 years ago.
