There’s more to the historic town of Sandwich, MA than just its unusual name. The town, which is the oldest on Cape Cod, was founded all the way back in 1637. The marshes in town reminded its founders of Sandwich, England, and they decided to name it after the English town.
Over the years, the town has become known for its beautiful beaches and top-rated restaurants. A quick 30-minute drive from the inn, Sandwich is the perfect Cape Cod town to visit on your vacation.
WHAT TO DO
Sandwich is home to Heritage Museums & Gardens, the largest public garden in Southern New England. The 100-acre property not only has exquisite gardens, but also has several buildings with art exhibits, and an antique car collection. If you’re a history and/or art-lover, be sure to pencil in time to visit the Sandwich Glass Museum. The museum explains the fascinating history of the town, and the glass industry. Who knew Sandwich was a major contributor toward the early development of the American Industrial Revolution? When there, you’ll see glass blowing demonstrations and historic pieces, as well as new pieces of beautiful glass sculpture, jewelry, and pieces of art. There is a wonderful gift shop, so you may bring the perfect gift back home with you. If you are planning your trip in June, schedule your visit for the weekend of Sandwich Fest, the town’s cheeky celebration of its name with culinary showcases and, yes, even a sandwich competition!
WHAT TO SEE
Located on Smiling Pool in Sandwich, the Green Briar Nature Center is a peaceful and serene place to take in the nature of Cape Cod. It was the home of author Thornton W. Burgess, and is also the location of the famous Jam Kitchen. Nearby, the Shirley Cross Wildflower Garden, home to more than 300 plants, is eager to be explored. Afterward, head to the Sandwich Boardwalk and soak in the sun and the beautiful scenery. The boardwalk leads through gorgeous marshes, past the dunes, and to Cape Cod Bay. A visit to the Cape Cod Canal Visitor Center is quite informative about how the canal was constructed, and if you have your bikes with you – even better – go for a ride on the bike path which runs the length of the canal! And, do not overlook the beautiful Dexter Grist Mill, which is right in the middle of town.
WHERE TO EAT
Start the day off right with a coffee and sweet treat at Beth’s Bakery & Café. The Dunbar House Restaurant & Tea Room serves lunch and is also one of the few places on the Cape where you can still have high tea in the afternoon. Later on, if you’re looking for a nice restaurant for a romantic night out, The Dan’l Webster Inn is the place to go! The restaurant has been recognized as a Distinguished Restaurant of North America and offers breakfast, lunch, and dinner in its dining rooms and tavern. Fishermen’s View was recently awarded a Best of Boston award by Boston Magazine, less than two years after opening its doors. The restaurant and seafood market focus on fresh, locally-sourced seafood and has a beautiful view of the canal and marina for its diners.
