Meander down Old King’s Highway During Your Relaxing Cape Cod Vacation

Cape Cod is chock full of history and tradition.  From our colonial industrial roots to today’s recreational sailing and whale watching, our region has heaps of tales and treasures to discover.  An exciting and unique way to experience the mid-Cape area is to travel Old King’s Highway.  Not only will the road lead you through some of the nation’s oldest towns and villages and along scenic vistas, but the highway itself is part of Cape Cod’s deep history. (Its a way to see what Cape Cod looked like before the tourists discovered it!)

Known as Route 6A today, Old King’s Highway still closely follows the original Native American trail, formerly used by European settlers.  The trail became a well-worn path, and ultimately a road as commercial trade began between Cape Cod and the colonies further north.  Plymouth colonists regularly referred to this trail as “King’s Highway”, and the name remains.

As a way to relax and get in vacation mode, meander along Old King’s Highway (versus Mid-Cape Highway) to find your way to Brewster By the Sea Inn. (Take Exit 3 after the Sagamore Bridge, and head north to 6A.) You will drive through the peaceful villages of Sandwich, Barnstable, Yarmouth, and Dennis, and arrive at the Inn in western Brewster.  Many homes and churches along the way are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Here at the Inn, we are graced with a view of the Historic Windmill Village at Drummer Boy Park. The Park features the Higgins Farm Windmill, one-room primitive Harris-Black House, and Hopkins Blacksmith Shop!

In addition to the enjoyable drive, you’ll have multiple opportunities to poke in and around the small harbors and beaches on Cape Cod Bay. Plus, dozens of antique shops, gift shops, artist studios, and restaurants dot the road along the way.  The antique stores, especially, allow visitors to see, touch, and even take home a piece of the region’s history! Many of the stores offer uncommon inventory, but two of the larger and notable ones are the Antique Center of Cape Cod and Sandwich Antiques Center.

Voted best antiques store for 11 consecutive years, Sandwich Antiques Center is one of the most revered antique locales in all of New England. Their 5,000 square-foot facility offers something for everyone. You will find art, jewelry, and even furniture here – each with a story to tell.  The Antique Center of Cape Cod also boasts an exceptionally large inventory. Located in Dennis and open daily, their showroom features pottery, china, furniture, dolls, books, art, and much more.

Exploring Old King’s Highway should definitely be on your Cape Cod itinerary.  And we are smack-dab in the middle of it!  Come, stay, visit and explore from Brewster By The Sea Inn, the perfect location in the heart of the Cape’s antiquing country. You’ll experience warm and friendly hospitality in a luxurious and relaxing setting.  Hope to see you soon!

A pandemic escape!

Amy and her staff are incredible. The attention to detail is hands down the best. Given all that is going on in this Covid-19 world, we felt safe and comfortable. Check-in was contactless. Our room was perfect. The breakfasts were wonderful and loved the cookies in the afternoon. The icing on the cake was Sweet Pea, Amy's dog, an absolute love! Amy, thank you, we'll be back!

Outstanding getaway!

This was our second time staying at this lovely inn. The rooms are tastefully decorated and the grounds are both spacious and tranquil. There is even a pool which is an excellent way to cool off after a day exploring the nearby trails or bike path. The breakfasts are creative and delicious and very filling. Amy, the owner and innkeeper is wonderful. She takes great care of the property and is so welcoming to her guests. She is very gracious in helping with advice on what to do in the area and making dinner reservations. We were among her first guests as Massachusetts began to "open up" during the Covid 19 crisis. She took great care to assure that everything was done to make her guests safe and comfortable. We look forward to returning.
