Spring is here on Cape Cod

by Donna Cain

While this picture was taken last year I feel like the daffodils will be blooming soon, and I should run to our local nursery to buy my first pansies for the window boxes and greeting outdoor pots. Thankfully we have had an especially mild winter and all of our first blooming bulbs are poking through the dirt.

We are just finishing up our winter renovations, which have been extensive this year. Byron will be taking new room pictures soon which he will be posting on our web site. In the meantime, I thought I would write another blog next week with some of my pictures to give you a sneak preview. We have been so pleased with all of the updates including a new bathroom for Acorn, new hardwood floors in many of the rooms, updated granite sink countertops, new paint and redecorating and a brand new one bedroom apartment that we are calling the Patio Suite.

Many guests ask us what is open this time of the year. We are so lucky in Brewster as many of our favorite spots stay open year round including Bucas (our favorite Northern Italian restaurant), Mahoney’s and the Lost Dog Pub, Marshside Restaurant, Wayne’s Antiques, Dennis Antiques, Cape Cod Playhouse movie theatre and the Cape Cod Symphony. I thought it would be useful to check out the opening dates of some of our seasonal favorites which are shown below with their web sites.

Whale watching at it’s finest

Whale Watch Dolphin Fleet in P’Town – opening April 15th www.whalewatch.com The whales will be arriving soon and many guests drive to P’Town where often you can see the whales with your naked eye from Race Point Beach.

Pilgrim Monument

Pilgrim Monument– opening April 15th. www.pilgrim-monument.org Last fall we climbed the monument and toured the museum. If you park in the museum parking lot you receive a free ticket to the monument plus you are very central to everything in P’Town.

Beautiful views of P’Town harbor

For restaurants in P”town we love to recommend the Muse and Front Street, both stay open year round. For a more casual meal we also love the Lobster Pot which usually opens sometime in April.

Greater Yellowlegs

Greater Yellow Legs

Wellfleet Audubon Sanctuary- open year round with wonderful events and educational classes and tours. www.massaudubon.org

Natural History Museum- closed on Monday and Tuesday for March and April with many events and educational seminars. www.ccmnh.org The Natural History museum is just up the street from the inn and many of our guests enjoy the nature trail that is a beautiful walk to the bay. The Osprey couple that come back year after year should be arriving soon and can be viewed from the boardwalk.

Beautiful hydrangeas at Brewster by the Sea Inn and Spa

Heritage Museum and Gardens– opening April 16th. This is not only a spectacular garden but also includes an interesting car museum with many new exhibits. They have also just added a fun new educational zip line. Really worth a visit, especially when the rhododendrons and hydrangeas are blooming in the spring.

Wellfleet Drive In- opening late May. There is something very special about an old fashion drive in movie experience on Cape Cod. www.wellfleetcinemas.com

Melody Tent- First performance on June 18th with summer talent including Lee Brice, Heart, Jake Owen and Vince Gill  www.melodytent.org

Captain Bob and Sally enjoying an afternoon sail

Cape Cod Sail by Captain Bob- There is something very special about an afternoon sail with Captain Bob on Nantucket Sound. Several of our guests have enjoyed his services.www.capecodsail.com Available as soon as the weather warms.

Cape Cod Playhouse- opening June 7 www.capecodplayhouse.com Celebrating their 85th season, the Cape Playhouse is America’s Oldest Professional Summer Theatre with wonderful mysteries and musicals for all ages to enjoy.

Cape Rep Theatre- first performance on May 5th www.caperep.org. Just love our small town local theatre in Brewster. Check on line for their wonderful summer schedule.

The Cape has many wonderful antique shops and art galleries, many that stay open year round. Our favorites are Addison Art Gallery in Orleans and Wayne’s Antiques in Brewster. We also like to recommend to our weekend guests that they check out the many wonderful estate sales that usually run on Friday and Saturday mornings. It’s amazing the wonderful finds that are offered at incredibly low prices.

Happy Spring!
